What did I tell ya? I knew Book Club would do me good. And we actually didn't even read The Help yet. It came up that it's our September book, so a few women made comments about it.
Two girls who have both lived in the South agreed that the kind of racism shown in the book continues to be alive and well there. Interestingly, one said her mother attended a public library's book club for The Help there in the South. Every person that spoke up hated it. Hit too close to home for them, according to this mother.
I was rather shocked. I was under the impression we were in the 21st century and hated only things like greenhouse gases.
I don't repeal my former comments. However, I'm willing to put my literary opinions aside to recognize that the book does contain a message we must consider.
